Dangerous Trucking: Trucking Company’s Negligent and Dangerous Practices

Truck Drivers

There is an apparent shortage of truck drivers around the United States. Recently this has cost a sharp rise in prices and panic about shortages and high prices.

Trucking Industry

In 2014, the trucking industry was short 38,000 drivers. That number may reach nearly 175,000 by 2024. The need is detrimental to long-haul operations, and many trucking companies struggle to find qualified drivers.

Truck Driver Shortage

There is a couple of reason for the truck driver shortage. The two main reasons are the age of the truckers and the hour-of-service regulation. The average age of a truck driver is 47, and many cannot continue working due to health complications. Trucking is not a popular job among the young. The new generation is not replacing the older truckers. The shortage has caused many trucking companies to overlook safety and compromise for lower standards.

A list of dangerous practices can include but is not limited to hiring potentially dangerous or unfit drivers, encouraging drivers to violate hours-of-service rules, and placing newly hired drivers on the road before they are adequately trained. Further, a dangerous practice of trucking companies is creating unrealistic delivery schedules, poorly maintained trucks, and falsifying logbooks. In addition to unsafe practices, trucking companies’ pay structure could also significantly impact the dangerous propensities of trucking.

Truckers are paid by the number of miles they drive. This leads many truckers to take drugs to stay up, drive long hours, and go fast. Paying by the mile is not only unfair but also unsafe. The pay-by-the-mile pay structure incentivizes drivers to speed, avoid taking breaks, use drugs to stay awake for long hours, not report injuries or health problems, and drive during unsafe conditions. Truck drivers are also less likely to refuse to violate safety regulations because of fear of retaliation from their employers.
